Downhill Biking as a Sport

All kinds of extreme sports are gaining in popularity these days, and have been doing so for years. While skateboarding was a huge part of that in years past, mountain biking and downhill biking is quickly becoming some of the most popular sports all over the world. Daredevils from all sorts of cultures and countries are drawn to the excitement of downhill biking as a sport, and for a variety of reasons.

The term biking on its own takes into consideration a whole host of styles from cross country, where you ride up and down hills, to cyclo cross, which combines road and mountain biking, and of course to downhill biking. While cross country biking was by far the most popular, downhill biking is quickly catching up thanks to the speed and excitement that it offers. Downhill biking is one of the most extreme varieties of mountain biking and that is why it is catching one as an exciting sport in and of itself.

As the name suggests, you only ride down the hill in downhill biking, and most times people transport themselves and their bikes to the top of a mountain before they begin riding. The point of the sport is to get to the bottom of the hill as quickly as possible, while avoiding all kinds of obstacles and rough terrain. In some instances, the terrain and situation can get incredibly extreme, bringing more and more excitement and danger into the sport. Beginners to the sport can obviously start off on easier hills and stay away from the dangerous stuff, but it is the obstacles and speed that have created such a popular sport.

On some hills, downhill biking can include jumps that can get to as long as 12 meters and drop 3 meters. Those jumps combined with the rough terrain on hills and all of the obstacles makes downhill biking as a sport incredibly thrilling to watch and take part in. Most of the time, downhill bikers are the type of people that consistently look for a challenge and want to test themselves in ways that they never have before. Your adrenaline starts to pump as you head down the hill and you often do not even feel the bumps and bruises thanks to all of the excitement.

If you like a challenge, like to take risks, and want a little more out of life then downhill biking is the sport that you are looking for.
